Connecting Marrakech to Merzouga by road is one of the most beautiful journeys to take in southern Morocco. In just a few days, the landscapes constantly change: the High Atlas mountains, earthen villages, palm groves, verdant valleys, mineral gorges, and then vast desert expanses leading to the dunes of Erg Chebbi.
From Marrakech to the High Atlas
The journey begins in Marrakech before heading towards the High Atlas Mountains. The road gradually climbs towards the mountain passes and offers numerous panoramic views of the valleys and Berber villages.
After passing through the Atlas Mountains, the landscape becomes more arid. Earthen buildings and old kasbahs announce the arrival in southern Morocco.
Ouarzazate and the Kasbah Route
The Ouarzazate region is a natural stop on the desert route. It offers the opportunity to discover the pre-Saharan landscapes, kasbahs and valleys that have made this part of Morocco famous.
From here, the road continues east towards the Valley of Roses and Boumalne Dadès .
The Dadès Valley and Gorges
The Dadès Valley is one of the major stages of the route. The road passes villages, gardens and impressive rock formations before plunging into the gorges.
Taking the time to spend a night there allows you to discover the valley without being limited to a simple crossing and to enjoy the landscapes at the end of the day or early in the morning.
The Todra Gorge and Tinghir
Further east, Tinghir and the Todra Gorge offer another face of southern Morocco. The palm grove contrasts with the high rock walls that frame the road to the gorge.
It is an easy stage to integrate between Dadès and Merzouga, with the possibility of walking in the gorges or discovering the surrounding villages.
Towards Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes
Continuing towards Erfoud and then Rissani, the hills gradually disappear, giving way to the vast expanses of the Sahara. As you approach Merzouga , the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon.
Merzouga marks the culmination of the road trip. Walking or camel riding, 4x4 excursions, sunsets on the dunes or nights in bivouacs allow you to extend the desert experience.
How many days should I plan for?
A 7-day itinerary allows you to travel without turning your trip into a series of long days of driving. It leaves enough time to plan several stops and enjoy the Dadès, Todra, and Merzouga regions.
For a more relaxed trip, a few extra days allow for adding detours, hikes or a second night in certain regions.
Planning your road trip
Distances shouldn't be measured solely in kilometers. Mountain roads and numerous points of interest often encourage a leisurely pace. It's therefore best to plan reasonable stages and avoid trying to reach Marrakech and Merzouga in a single day.
