Merzouga is a Saharan village in southeastern Morocco, nestled at the foot of Erg Chebbi , a spectacular collection of dunes that rises directly from the village. The contrast between the sand, palm groves, and surrounding mineral landscapes makes it one of the major destinations in the Moroccan desert.
Merzouga is an ideal starting point for exploring the Sahara on foot, by 4x4, or on camelback. Excursions offer the chance to witness sunrise or sunset over the dunes and spend a night in a bivouac . The surrounding area also boasts more varied landscapes, particularly around the seasonal lake of Dayet Srij.
About thirty kilometers away, Rissani , the former capital of Tafilalet and an important caravan center, offers a perfect opportunity to explore the region further with its souk, ksour (fortified villages), and historical heritage. Merzouga thus provides an ideal base for combining desert exploration, excursions, and immersion in southeastern Morocco.
