Marrakech is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco. Founded in the 11th century, it is known for its medina with ochre ramparts, its lively souks and the famous Jemaa el-Fna square, the vibrant heart of the city where merchants, musicians, storytellers and food stalls mingle.
The medina is home to several major monuments, including the Koutoubia Mosque , the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, and numerous madrasas and traditional houses. The Menara Gardens and the Majorelle Garden offer a more tranquil contrast to the bustle of the historic center.
Marrakech also makes an excellent base for exploring the High Atlas and southern Morocco. To the west, Essaouira provides access to the Atlantic coast, while to the southeast, Ouarzazate opens the way to kasbahs, valleys, and pre-Saharan landscapes.
