Arriving in Morocco: what to do upon leaving the airport?

SIM card, dirhams, ATM, taxi, transfer, or rental car: the first decisions are often made as soon as you step off the plane. Here's the order in which to organize your arrival in Morocco to reach your accommodation easily and avoid unnecessary expenses or procedures.

After landing in Morocco, a few steps are usually all that's needed before reaching your accommodation: collect your luggage, get an internet connection, obtain some dirhams and choose your means of transport from the airport.

There's no need to sort everything out immediately at the terminal. The most helpful thing is to distinguish what you'll need in the next few minutes from what can wait until you arrive in the city.

First thing to do: disable data roaming

Before even starting the procedures at the airport, check your phone settings. If you are using a European SIM card and you are not sure whether your plan includes Morocco, your first step should be to disable data roaming .

Morocco does not automatically benefit from European roaming. When you disable airplane mode after landing, your phone may connect to a Moroccan network and some applications may use data in the background: messaging, photo syncing, backups, updates, or notifications.

It is therefore best to leave data roaming disabled until you have checked the conditions of your plan or installed a suitable SIM or eSIM.

If you are using a Dual SIM phone, also check which line is configured for mobile data and disable automatic data switching if you do not want your European line to take over.

To choose between your usual plan, a local card and an eSIM, consult our guide Telephone and Internet in Morocco: European SIM, Moroccan card or eSIM?

In what order should I organize my arrival in Morocco?

For most travelers, the simplest order is as follows:

  1. go through arrival formalities and collect luggage;
  2. check the phone settings and get an internet connection if necessary;
  3. withdraw or exchange a small amount of dirhams;
  4. to meet up with your taxi, transfer, public transport or rental agency;
  5. then carry out in town the operations that are not urgent.

If your transfer is already booked, your phone has a working connection and you already have some dirhams, you can instead leave the airport almost immediately after collecting your luggage.

Before leaving the arrival area

Take advantage of the airport's Wi-Fi when available to check the exact address of your accommodation, any messages from your driver, and the means of transport you had planned.

Also save the address in your phone. For a riad located in a medina, it is useful to have not only the name of the establishment but also its access point by car , as a taxi cannot always reach the door directly.

If you have arranged a transfer, check the instructions received before leaving: name displayed on a sign, driver's number, telephone number or meeting point.

A screenshot of the address, phone number and reservation is also useful if the internet connection stops working.

Should you buy a SIM card at the airport?

It's not mandatory, but it can be very convenient. In several major Moroccan airports, telecom operators have counters or points of sale where you can obtain a Moroccan SIM card shortly after arrival.

This allows you to have internet access before leaving the airport and immediately use Google Maps, WhatsApp, booking apps or communicate with your accommodation and driver.

Before buying, ask clearly:

  • the total price of the pack;
  • the amount of data included;
  • the validity period;
  • if calls are included;
  • if the card is already activated.

When possible, check that the connection is working before leaving the counter.

Moroccan SIM, eSIM or European plan?

If your phone is eSIM compatible, you can also prepare your connection before the trip and have internet access upon arrival.

Travelers whose European plan already includes Morocco obviously have no reason to automatically purchase a new line. They simply need to check the amount of data actually included and any potential limitations.

On the other hand, if your subscription does not cover Morocco, do not activate data roaming without knowing the price.

A Moroccan SIM or eSIM can be particularly useful for a stay of several days. Find out more about the different options in our guide to SIM, eSIM, and Internet in Morocco .

Should you exchange money at the airport?

The main Moroccan airports have services allowing you to obtain dirhams upon arrival.

However, it is generally not necessary to immediately exchange all the money intended for the trip.

A small amount is enough to cover the initial expenses: taxi, coffee, tip or purchase made in a shop that does not accept the card.

You can then make further withdrawals or calmly compare the exchange options in town.

Can you withdraw dirhams from the airport ATM?

Using an ATM is another way to quickly obtain dirhams.

Before confirming the transaction, check any fees displayed as well as those applied by your own bank for a withdrawal made in Morocco.

If the ATM offers to convert the amount directly to euros, carefully review the terms and conditions before accepting. To have your bank or card issuer handle the conversion, generally choose a withdrawal charged in Moroccan dirhams (MAD) .

There's no need to withdraw a large sum of money just because you've arrived. A few hundred dirhams can be enough to start your stay if you also plan to use your bank card.

Currency exchange or ATM: which solution to choose?

There is no solution that is consistently cheaper.

The result depends on the rate offered by the exchange bureau, any fees charged by the distributor and especially the commissions stipulated by your own bank card.

If you brought euros in cash, exchanging a small amount upon arrival is easy. If your card charges little or no fees abroad, withdrawing cash can be just as convenient.

We detail these differences, as well as card payments and the conversions offered by terminals, in our guide Money in Morocco: cash, bank card, currency exchange and ATMs — how to pay? .

How to get to your accommodation from the airport?

Depending on the city and the airport, several solutions are possible:

  • official taxi;
  • transfer booked with the accommodation provider or a service provider;
  • bus or shuttle;
  • train in some cases;
  • rental car.

The best solution depends on the airport, the time of arrival, the number of travelers, the luggage, and the location of the accommodation.

If you do not wish to drive during your stay, our guide Travelling in Morocco without a car: how to get around? also presents the main options for continuing your journey by train, coach, taxi and transfer.

Take a taxi at the airport

If you choose a taxi, head to the official station indicated in the airport or on the arrivals plaza.

Rules and prices are not the same at all airports. Depending on the city, the service may use a regulated price, a price list based on the destination, or a specific organization.

Check the information and fares displayed before boarding the vehicle and, where an official ticket office or booking system is provided, use it.

Avoid spontaneously following someone who approaches you in the terminal without having clearly identified the service offered and its price.

Taxis, advertised prices and several other situations that a traveler may encounter are also addressed in our guide The pitfalls to avoid in Morocco: tips for traveling with peace of mind .

Taxi or private transfer?

An official taxi is perfectly suitable when your destination is easy to identify and you arrive at a normal time.

On the other hand, a pre-booked transfer can be particularly comfortable for a first arrival, with children, lots of luggage or after a late flight.

It's also a good option for riads located in the medinas. A driver familiar with the establishment will generally know where to drop you off and can sometimes arrange the rest of the journey when the last streets are inaccessible by car.

Before departure, ask if the advertised price is for the entire vehicle or each passenger and if a late arrival incurs a surcharge.

Is the transfer offered by the accommodation worthwhile?

It is not necessarily cheaper than a taxi, but it can greatly simplify the arrival process.

The main advantage is that the driver knows your destination and normally has information about your flight and accommodation.

For a riad that is difficult to locate in a medina, this tranquility can justify a reasonable price difference.

Can public transport be used from the airport?

It depends heavily on the city.

Some airports offer bus or shuttle services to the city center. Casablanca Mohammed V Airport also has a train station providing access to Casablanca, allowing for onward travel by rail.

In other cities, taxis, buses and transfers are the main options.

As schedules and frequencies may change, please check the latest information for your airport before traveling.

Should you rent your car directly at the airport?

Most major Moroccan airports have car rental agencies. Picking up your vehicle upon arrival can be especially convenient if your trip starts immediately with a tour.

This is not always the best solution if you plan to spend several days in a large city or medina before hitting the road.

In Marrakech or Fez, for example, a car can sit idle for several days, incurring rental and parking fees. It might therefore be more practical to drive to your accommodation first and then rent a car when leaving the city.

Before booking, consult our guide Renting a car in Morocco: everything you need to know before driving , which details in particular deposit, excess, insurance, credit card, condition report, fuel, radars, mountain roads and use of a 4x4.

What should I check before leaving the airport with a rental car?

Don't just pick up the keys and leave.

Before leaving the parking lot:

  • Check that all existing damage is listed on the inventory;
  • photograph or film the bodywork, bumpers, rims and windshield;
  • check the fuel level;
  • check if the vehicle runs on petrol or diesel;
  • save the rental company's support number;
  • Set your GPS before hitting the road.

A scratch not noted at the start of the rental is much harder to dispute at the time of return. Taking a few minutes to check the condition of the vehicle can therefore prevent an unpleasant surprise.

Should you rent a car upon arrival if you are staying in the city?

Not necessarily.

In the city centers of Marrakech, Fez, Casablanca or Tangier, a car can quickly become more of a hindrance than a help due to traffic, parking and pedestrian zones.

If you are spending the first few days in a major city before starting a tour, compare the cost of a taxi or airport transfer with the cost of several extra days of car rental and parking.

You can also combine several modes of transport: explore the major cities without a vehicle, then rent a car only for the part of the trip where it really provides more freedom.

What should you do if your flight arrives late at night?

Arriving at night requires a little more organization.

Inform your accommodation of the expected time, especially if it is a small hostel or riad whose reception is not open continuously.

Also, check your transportation arrangements from the airport in advance. When public transport is less frequent or has stopped running for the day, booking a transfer can save you the hassle of arranging transport after several hours of travel.

Finally, keep the accommodation's address and phone number accessible offline.

Be careful with your phone's battery

The phone becomes particularly useful immediately after arrival: messages from the driver, map, hotel address, reservation, translation or confirmation of a car rental.

After several hours of travel, however, the battery may be almost empty.

A charged power bank in your carry-on luggage can therefore be useful. Before departure, also download offline maps of the regions included in your itinerary.

Even with an offline SIM card, remember to check again that your European line is not using roaming data until you have confirmed that your plan covers Morocco.

What if you have neither internet nor dirhams?

The situation is generally not problematic.

Major airports have services where you can withdraw money, and information desks can direct you to available means of transport.

If you have booked accommodation, simply save its address and phone number on a screenshot or in a document accessible without a connection.

It is also preferable to prepare this information before takeoff rather than depending entirely on a mobile connection upon arrival.

Mistakes to avoid when arriving in Morocco

  • Reactivating roaming data on your European line without knowing the cost.
  • Allow the phone to automatically use a European line for mobile data.
  • To change your entire budget immediately without needing to.
  • Accepting a conversion to euros at the ATM without checking the terms and conditions.
  • Taking transport without knowing its pricing structure.
  • Following someone offering transportation without clearly identifying the service being used.
  • Renting a car several days too early when it will remain parked.
  • Leaving the rental agency without completing a detailed inventory.
  • Relying solely on an address available in an application requiring the internet.

How much time should I allow between landing and leaving the airport?

It is difficult to give a precise duration. Security checks, baggage waiting times, and passenger volume can vary considerably depending on the flight and the airport.

Therefore, avoid scheduling a meeting too close to the announced landing time.

If you have booked a transfer, please provide your flight number if possible. This will allow the driver to take into account any potential changes to your arrival time.

In Marrakech, Casablanca, Agadir, Fez or Tangier: the arrival is not exactly the same

The principles remain similar, but available transport, distances to the centre and taxi organization vary depending on the airport.

In Casablanca Mohammed V, the train is an additional option, while in other major destinations travelers make greater use of taxis, buses, transfers and rental cars.

Before departure, it is therefore worth checking the options that correspond precisely to the airport where you will be landing.

The checklist just before exiting the terminal

  • Data roaming is disabled on the European line if necessary.
  • Good line selected for mobile data in case of Dual SIM.
  • Accommodation address recorded in the phone.
  • Telephone number of accommodation or driver available.
  • Operational internet connection or information accessible offline.
  • A few dirhams available if needed.
  • Clearly identified means of transport.
  • Meeting point verified if a transfer is booked.
  • A busy itinerary before setting off with a rental car.

Arriving in Morocco actually requires very little preparation. The most important things are to avoid unintentional roaming charges, to have some dirhams on hand, and to know how to get to your accommodation.

Once these initial steps have been completed, the SIM card, currency exchange, withdrawals or car rental can be arranged according to the actual needs of the trip rather than in the rush of the first few minutes after landing.
