Morocco: Should you book your accommodation and excursions in advance?

Should you book everything in advance of your trip to Morocco, or is it better to have some flexibility once you're there? The answer depends on the season, the destination, and the type of accommodation or excursions you're looking for. Marrakech, the desert, the coast, and the Atlas Mountains all require different levels of planning.

Booking your entire trip several months in advance or going to Morocco with only a few nights planned? Both ways of traveling are possible.

The right level of planning depends mainly on the season, the destination, the type of accommodation sought, and the planned activities . Finding any room in Marrakech is not the same as booking a specific riad in the medina, a small mountain inn, or a particular bivouac in the desert.

For most trips, the best solution is to book the important stages in advance while keeping some flexibility for the rest of the itinerary.

Should you book all your accommodations before you leave?

No, it's not essential in all cases.

Morocco offers a wide range of accommodation options: hotels, riads, guesthouses, hostels, campsites, and small family-run establishments. Outside of peak season, it's often possible to find a room a few days before arrival, or even on the same day in some destinations.

But waiting until the last minute reduces the choice. The best value establishments, small hostels with few rooms, and particularly well-located accommodations may be fully booked, while there are still many other options available in the destination.

The real question is therefore not just "will I find a room?" , but rather "will I find the accommodation I want at the price I want?" .

When is it best to book early?

It is particularly advisable to plan ahead when:

  • you are travelling during a very busy period;
  • you want a specific type of accommodation;
  • you are looking for a particular category of room;
  • you are travelling as a family or in a group;
  • you need several rooms in the same establishment;
  • your itinerary includes a small hostel with limited capacity;
  • you wish to spend a night in a particular bivouac;
  • You have a private excursion on a specific date;
  • Your itinerary leaves little room for modifying the stages.

The more constraints your trip has, the more useful advance booking becomes.

High season and low season: is there a rule for all of Morocco?

No. Morocco has several climates and the most sought-after periods are not exactly the same in all regions.

The Atlantic coast, the imperial cities, the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara can experience very different tourist rhythms.

In the south and the desert, spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant conditions. On the coast, summer, on the other hand, can attract more travelers seeking more moderate temperatures than inland.

To better choose the period of your tour in the South, consult our guide When to go to Southern Morocco?

How far in advance should I book?

There is no universal deadline, but some guidelines can help to organize.

For a typical stay outside of peak periods, booking major accommodations a few weeks before departure generally leaves a comfortable choice.

For a very popular period, a specific establishment, a group stay or a particular desert experience, starting your search several months in advance may be preferable.

Conversely, a flexible traveler who is willing to choose from remaining availabilities may sometimes book only a few days before each leg of the journey.

Marrakech: Is it better to book in advance?

In Marrakech, there are a huge number of accommodations available. Finding a place to sleep is therefore rarely the main problem.

On the other hand, the most sought-after riads , small places with a few rooms and establishments well located in the medina can be fully booked long before the date of stay.

Booking early is particularly advantageous if you wish to:

  • a specific riad;
  • a family room;
  • a swimming pool;
  • accommodation very close to Jemaa el-Fna;
  • a category of private room;
  • several rooms in the same establishment.

If your only goal is to find decent accommodation in Marrakech and you are flexible on the area and style, it is usually possible to book later.

End of year, holidays and major events: plan ahead

Certain periods see higher demand: European holidays, end of year, long weekends and major events organized in a destination.

Around Christmas and New Year , for example, the most attractive accommodations in Marrakech and certain desert experiences can fill up much earlier than a typical weekday stay.

If your dates are fixed and correspond to a period of high demand, booking early mainly helps to avoid having to choose between less suitable accommodation and a much higher price.

Do you need to book a night in the desert in advance?

This is one of the experiences for which I would most often advise booking in advance.

In Merzouga, M'Hamid or Chegaga , the expression "night in the desert" can refer to very different experiences: inn at the foot of the dunes, fixed camp, more isolated bivouac, transfer by 4x4, camel ride or complete package with dinner and breakfast.

Waiting until you are there sometimes allows you to find a service, but not necessarily the type of camp, the level of comfort or the location you had imagined.

Before booking, our guide Sleeping in the desert in Morocco: bivouac, camp or hostel? helps to understand the main differences.

Merzouga, M'Hamid, Zagora or Chegaga: the booking process is not the same

In Merzouga, the road practically reaches the foot of the dunes, and there's a wide range of tourist options. Therefore, it's easier to find an alternative if your first choice is fully booked.

In Chegaga, the organization may require more advance notice as access to the large dunes generally involves a track and a transfer by 4x4 .

In this case, you are not just booking a place to sleep: you sometimes have to coordinate the vehicle, the driver, the meeting point, dinner and the return trip.

If you are still undecided about the region, consult our guide Merzouga, Zagora, M'Hamid or Chegaga: which desert to choose? .

What should you check before booking a bivouac?

Two offers bearing the same name can include very different services.

Before confirming, please check the following:

  • the actual location of the camp;
  • the means used to reach him;
  • if the transfer by 4x4 is included;
  • whether a camel ride is included or optional;
  • dinner and breakfast;
  • the presence of a private or shared bathroom;
  • arrival and return times;
  • the possible parking for your car;
  • the cancellation conditions.

An apparently lower price may simply correspond to a package including fewer services.

Do excursions need to be booked in advance of the trip?

Not all of them.

Many classic excursions can be arranged once you arrive, especially in major tourist destinations.

However, it is advisable to book in advance when it comes to:

  • of a private excursion with a specific guide;
  • of a vehicle with driver for a whole day;
  • of a 4x4 excursion requiring special organization;
  • of a guided mountain hike;
  • of an activity with a limited number of participants;
  • of an activity that is essential to your itinerary and cannot be postponed.

For a secondary activity that you are willing to cancel depending on the weather or your fatigue, booking on site can, on the contrary, offer more freedom.

Booking all excursions before departure can also be a mistake

A completely locked-down program can become restrictive.

You may discover on site that you wish to stay an extra day in a valley, modify your itinerary or simply rest.

The weather can also make an activity less appealing on the scheduled day.

It is therefore often preferable to book important or hard-to-replace experiences in advance and leave simpler activities open.

Should you book a hiking guide in the Atlas Mountains?

For a short, easy walk that is clearly marked, a guide is not always necessary.

For a longer hike, a summit, a route linking several villages or a less obvious path, going with a local guide may be preferable.

If you have a specific guide in mind or if your hike corresponds to a non-modifiable date, book before the trip.

In small mountain resorts, the number of available guides is naturally much more limited than the number of taxis or agencies that can be found in a large city.

And what about mountain hostels?

Accommodation options in the valleys and villages of the Atlas Mountains are less extensive than in Marrakech or Agadir.

It is therefore advisable to book when your itinerary depends on a specific stage , especially if the next stage is far away or if you are travelling without a car.

In a small ten-room inn, a few groups are enough to completely fill the establishment.

This logic also applies to rural guesthouses and accommodations located in the southern valleys.

Should you book early on the Atlantic coast?

The situation varies depending on the destination and the season.

In Agadir, there is a wide range of hotels and numerous accommodation options. In smaller destinations or some coastal villages, the choice can be much more limited.

Summer, school holidays and weekends can increase demand, especially in destinations also frequented by Moroccan travelers.

If you're simply looking for an available room, you can often maintain some flexibility. If you want specific accommodation facing the ocean, a particular terrace, or multiple bedrooms, it's best to plan ahead.

Essaouira: book in advance or improvise?

Essaouira has many riads, guesthouses and hotels, but smaller establishments can fill up quickly during busy periods.

The same phenomenon occurs when an event or festival attracts many visitors to the city.

For a stay on fixed dates during a busy period, booking accommodation in advance is therefore preferable.

For travel outside of peak season, maintaining some flexibility is much easier.

Does travelling during Ramadan change bookings?

Ramadan does not require booking all accommodations far in advance.

However, it can change the opening hours of restaurants, activities, excursions and certain services .

If an excursion must start or end at a specific time, confirm the times directly with the service provider.

As Eid al-Fitr approaches, family travel may also increase. It is therefore wise to plan certain transportation arrangements in advance.

Our guide "Travelling to Morocco during Ramadan: what changes for a tourist?" details these particularities.

Do you need to book transport in advance?

Again, this depends on the route.

For a small taxi or a large regional taxi, booking several weeks in advance is generally pointless.

For some trains, long-distance coaches, private transfers or travel during a period of high demand, booking or checking availability in advance may be more prudent.

If you are travelling without a car, consult our guide Travelling in Morocco without a car: how to get around?

What if you rent a car?

Having a car provides a lot of flexibility for accommodation: you can sleep in a hostel located outside the centre or more easily change a stage of your trip.

The rental itself may, however, require advance planning, especially if you are looking for a particular category: automatic transmission, large family vehicle, SUV or 4x4 .

A standard vehicle is generally easier to find than a specific category.

Find the points to check before booking in our guide Renting a car in Morocco: everything you need to know before driving .

Should I book directly with the accommodation?

Once you have found an establishment that interests you, it can be helpful to check its terms and conditions and compare the different booking options.

Booking directly sometimes makes it easier to ask specific questions regarding:

  • the parking lot;
  • meals;
  • arrival time;
  • a transfer;
  • an excursion;
  • a family room;
  • the cancellation conditions.

However, don't just compare the displayed price. Always check what's included and the terms and conditions applicable to the chosen offer.

Request written confirmation

When making a reservation directly with a small establishment, keep a written confirmation stating at a minimum:

  • the name of the establishment;
  • the dates;
  • the number of people;
  • the type of room or service;
  • the agreed price;
  • included services;
  • the amount of any potential down payment;
  • the cancellation conditions if they have been agreed upon.

An exchange by email or a written confirmation helps to avoid misunderstandings several weeks later.

Beware of offers that don't specify what's included.

This is particularly important for excursions and services in the desert.

One price may include only transport while another also includes meals, guide, overnight stay, camel and 4x4 transfer.

Before comparing two offers, make sure they actually correspond to the same service.

Booking too quickly based solely on price is one of the situations that can lead to disappointment. Find more advice in "Pitfalls to Avoid in Morocco: Tips for a Peaceful Trip ."

Is a deposit required?

Accommodation, camps or service providers may require a deposit to secure a booking, especially when a service needs to be arranged specifically for you.

This is not abnormal in itself.

Before paying, simply make sure you know:

  • the identity of the service provider;
  • the total amount of the reservation;
  • the amount of the deposit;
  • the remaining balance;
  • the cancellation conditions;
  • the payment method used.

Always keep proof of payment and the corresponding reservation.

Is booking with free cancellation a good idea?

Yes, when a route is not yet fully defined.

A modifiable or cancellable reservation allows you to secure accommodation while retaining the possibility of adjusting your trip.

However, it may cost more than a non-refundable ticket.

The right choice therefore depends on the actual likelihood of changing your dates. Paying more for flexibility you'll never use isn't always necessary.

Road trip: do you need to book every night?

For a road trip, it is often advantageous to combine reservations and freedom.

For example, you can book:

  • the first night after your arrival;
  • the essential steps;
  • bivouacking in the desert;
  • small-capacity accommodations;
  • the last night before your return flight.

Intermediate stages can then be booked a few days in advance if the season and your itinerary allow.

This method allows you to maintain freedom without risking compromising the essential moments of the trip.

Why book the first night?

Even for travelers who like to improvise, booking the first night is generally a good idea.

After a flight, arrival formalities and possibly a transfer, looking for accommodation with your luggage offers few advantages.

You also immediately have an address to give to the driver or transfer service.

To organize the first few hours of your stay, consult our guide Arriving in Morocco: what to do when leaving the airport?

And what about the last night before the plane?

The final stage also deserves to be secured when your flight departs early or you need to reach a distant airport.

Avoid planning an itinerary where you rely on a long drive or excursion on the same day as your return flight.

Spending the last night in an area with easy access to the airport greatly reduces the risk of delays on the road.

When can you really travel without booking anything?

This is especially possible when several conditions are met:

  • you are travelling outside of peak season;
  • You are flexible regarding accommodation;
  • are you travelling alone or as a couple;
  • You have your own vehicle or a rental car;
  • you do not have an activity booked on a fixed date;
  • You agree to modify your itinerary according to availability.

This type of trip can be particularly enjoyable because it allows you to extend a stop you like or modify the route depending on the weather.

When is travelling without a reservation a bad idea?

Conversely, improvising completely becomes riskier when:

  • you are travelling during a very busy period;
  • There are five or six of you;
  • You need several rooms;
  • you are only looking for high-end or very special establishments;
  • your itinerary includes areas with limited accommodation;
  • you depend on organized transfers;
  • You want a specific camp or excursion in the desert.

In these situations, improvisation does not necessarily mean that you will find nothing, but you may have to modify your plan or accept a solution that less meets your expectations.

A good strategy: book the essentials and keep the rest flexible

For many travellers, it's the best compromise.

Before departure, reserve items that are difficult to replace:

  • the first and last nights;
  • the accommodations that are truly important to you;
  • the chosen desert or bivouac;
  • essential private excursions;
  • small inns located on an essential stop.

Then maintain flexibility for nights and activities that you can easily replace.

This allows you to benefit from the security of an organized trip without turning each day into a rigid schedule.

The checklist before booking

  • Check if the dates correspond to a particularly popular period.
  • Consider how many alternatives exist in the destination.
  • Check the cancellation policy.
  • Confirm what is included in the price.
  • For an excursion, check the transport, meals and schedules.
  • For a bivouac, check access and transfers.
  • For a group, book earlier to secure several rooms together.
  • Obtain written confirmation for a direct booking.
  • Keep proof of deposit or payment.

So, should you book Morocco well in advance?

Not necessarily the whole trip.

Morocco still allows for a lot of flexible travel, especially outside of peak periods and when you are willing to choose your accommodation based on availability.

On the other hand, the more important, rare or difficult to replace an experience is, the more it deserves to be booked early .

A specific riad in Marrakech, a small mountain inn, several rooms for a family or a particular night in the dunes should not be treated in the same way as a lunch, a small taxi or an excursion that is easy to find locally.

The best strategy is therefore generally to book the fixed points of the itinerary and then keep enough freedom to enjoy discoveries and changes of program once in Morocco.
