Agadir or Essaouira? Both cities are located on the Moroccan Atlantic coast and allow you to combine ocean, restaurants and excursions, but the experience of staying there is very different.

Agadir is primarily a major seaside destination, with a long beach, a seaside promenade, numerous hotels with swimming pools, and user-friendly tourist infrastructure. Essaouira offers more of a combination of historic medina, port, ramparts, handicrafts, and ocean .

The choice therefore depends less on the beauty of one or the other than on the type of holiday you are looking for.

Agadir and Essaouira in a few words

In summary:

  • Agadir : beach, swimming pool, seaside promenade, hotels, restaurants, easy holidays and numerous excursions in the Souss region;
  • Essaouira : fortified medina, fishing port, ramparts, narrow streets, crafts, beach and a more pronounced maritime atmosphere.

Agadir is more like a modern seaside resort where you can build your stay around relaxation and the sea.

Essaouira is more of a city to discover, in which the beach is part of the journey alongside the medina, the port and walks on the ramparts.

Agadir: the most seaside destination

Agadir is one of the easiest destinations in Morocco for organizing a holiday primarily focused on the beach.

Its large bay, its long seaside promenade and its wide range of accommodation options make it possible to spend several days without needing to make multiple trips.

Many hotels and residences also have swimming pools, making it easy to alternate between the ocean and swimming in the accommodation.

Agadir is therefore particularly suitable for travellers looking for a simple stay centered around the beach, sun, pool and restaurants .

Essaouira: the beach with a real medina

Essaouira offers a very different experience.

Its fortified medina, fishing port, ramparts, and white houses give the city a very strong identity. The medina of Essaouira, formerly Mogador, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city is easily explored on foot. In just a few minutes, you can walk from the narrow streets of the medina to the ramparts, reach the port and then continue to the main beach.

Essaouira will therefore be more suitable for travellers who wish to combine ocean, heritage and urban walks rather than building their entire stay around the beach.

Which city should I choose primarily for the beach?

If the beach is your priority, Agadir is generally more suitable.

The bay is directly integrated into a seaside resort with a long promenade, a wide choice of accommodation and many services nearby.

It is therefore easy to organize a very simple day: beach in the morning, lunch by the sea, swimming pool in the afternoon and then restaurant in the evening.

In Essaouira, the beach is vast and immediately accessible from the town, but it is more exposed to Atlantic winds. Depending on the conditions, it is particularly well-suited to walking and water sports.

To compare other coastal destinations in the country, see our guide Where to go to the beach in Morocco?

Is Essaouira too windy for the beach?

Essaouira is known for its wind, which is part of the destination's identity and explains its importance for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing.

This does not mean that it is impossible to enjoy the beach, but the experience is different from a seaside resort more organized around swimming and relaxing in the sun.

Conditions may vary depending on the day and time of year.

If your main objective is to spend several hours each day lying on the beach or around a pool, Agadir generally offers a more suitable environment.

Which destination is best for surfing?

Both cities provide access to areas renowned for winter sports, but they do not play exactly the same role.

In Essaouira, the wind is particularly favorable for kitesurfing and windsurfing , while various beaches in the region also allow for surfing.

Around Agadir, the coast located towards Taghazout and the neighboring villages constitutes one of the best known areas of Morocco for surfing.

Agadir can therefore be a comfortable base for exploring several spots in the region, while Essaouira allows you to directly combine water sports and a stay in a historic city.

Which city has the most heritage?

On this point, Essaouira offers the most immediately visible experience.

Its medina is surrounded by ramparts, and its historical layout remains very much present in the urban landscape. The narrow streets, the gates, the Skala, the port, and the old fortifications form an essential part of the experience.

The medina of Essaouira has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.

Agadir has an important history but its current face is much more modern, particularly following the 1960 earthquake which profoundly transformed the city.

For a stay primarily focused on discovering a historical city, Essaouira therefore corresponds more closely to this expectation.

What is there to see in Agadir besides the beach?

Agadir is not just about its hotels and its bay.

Souk El Had offers the opportunity to discover one of the city's major commercial areas, with food, spices, clothing, handicrafts and everyday products.

On the heights, Agadir Oufella overlooks the bay and allows you to observe the city and the coastline from a very different point of view.

The seafront promenade, the marina and the different districts of the city also allow you to vary your days without leaving Agadir.

Agadir's appeal, however, stems largely from its position as a base for exploring the surrounding area.

What to see in Essaouira?

In Essaouira, many of the sites can be explored simply on foot.

The medina forms the heart of the stay, with its narrow streets, souks and numerous small shops.

The ramparts and the Skala offer characteristic views of the Atlantic, while the port allows observation of the activity of fishermen and traditional boats.

The beach starts practically at the edge of town and makes it easy to extend the walk along the ocean.

This proximity between the medina, the port and the beach is one of Essaouira's great advantages.

Which city is best for handicrafts and souks?

Both destinations offer markets and shops, but the experience is different.

In Agadir, the Souk El Had is a vast market where products intended for locals are mixed with goods also of interest to travellers.

In Essaouira, small shops and workshops are more integrated into the alleyways of the medina.

The town is particularly known for its thuya wood work , which can be found in many handcrafted objects.

For a traveler who enjoys walking in a medina and gradually discovering the shops and workshops, Essaouira offers more of this experience.

Agadir or Essaouira for restaurants?

Both cities have a wide choice of restaurants, but not necessarily in the same style.

Agadir boasts a wide range of dining options, particularly around the seafront, the marina, and the tourist districts. It's easy to find restaurants to suit different budgets and cuisines.

In Essaouira, the meal is more integrated into the atmosphere of the medina and the port, with small restaurants, cafes, terraces and places set up in the old houses of the city.

Fish and seafood naturally occupy an important place in both destinations.

Which destination offers a more lively atmosphere?

Agadir functions more like a large tourist resort. Restaurants, hotels, a seafront promenade, and leisure facilities offer more choices for organizing your evenings.

Essaouira has a lively atmosphere but is generally more concentrated around the medina, restaurants and cafes.

The city is more conducive to walking, having dinner and then continuing the evening quietly than to seeking out a significant nightlife.

If you are primarily looking for numerous facilities and more options after the beach, Agadir is better suited to this type of stay.

And for a more peaceful stay?

Essaouira is particularly well suited to stays without a busy schedule.

The city is compact enough that you can leave the car behind, walk through the medina, have lunch near the port and then go to the beach without planning the whole day in advance.

Agadir can also be relaxing, especially in a hotel with a pool and on-site services, but the atmosphere is more that of a major seaside destination.

Agadir or Essaouira with children?

Agadir is particularly easy for a family holiday.

The combination of beach, hotels with swimming pool, restaurants and excursion opportunities makes it possible to organize simple days without imposing long visits on children.

Essaouira also works very well for families, especially if children enjoy walks, the port, the medina and the beach.

For young children, however, Agadir offers more opportunities to alternate between beach, pool and activities without needing to build a cultural program.

Agadir or Essaouira as a couple?

Both destinations are perfectly suitable for a couple's holiday, but again the atmosphere is different.

In Agadir, a couple might prefer a comfortable hotel with a swimming pool, spa, beach and restaurants nearby.

Essaouira offers a more intimate atmosphere around the riads, ramparts, cafes, medina and promenades facing the ocean .

For a stay where you mainly want to slow down, walk and enjoy the atmosphere of the city, Essaouira is particularly interesting.

What destination in summer?

Agadir and Essaouira are among the interesting Moroccan destinations in summer thanks to the influence of the Atlantic, which generally limits the extreme temperatures encountered in some inland regions.

Agadir is particularly suitable for those looking for a classic seaside holiday, with beach and swimming pool.

Essaouira also enjoys often moderate temperatures, but its wind can have a greater impact on the days.

To compare the coast with the Atlas Mountains and other regions suitable for this season, consult our guide Where to go in Morocco in summer?

And in winter?

The Atlantic coast also remains interesting in winter.

Agadir is particularly popular at this time of year for its generally mild daytime climate and offers an alternative to the cooler temperatures of many European destinations.

In Essaouira, the days can also be pleasant for visiting the medina and walking along the ocean, but the wind and maritime conditions give more of a coastal holiday feel than a holiday dedicated to swimming.

If you are travelling between December and February, check out our guide Where to go in Morocco in winter?

Which city for three days?

For a three-day stay, both destinations work very well.

In Essaouira, three days allow you to discover the medina, the ramparts, the port and the beach at a leisurely pace without feeling rushed.

In Agadir, three days can be enough to enjoy the beach, discover the city and take a first excursion in the surrounding area.

The choice therefore depends mainly on the priority of the stay: urban exploration in Essaouira or seaside relaxation in Agadir .

And for a week?

A week in Agadir alone is easy to organize for a traveler wishing to alternate between beach, pool and excursions.

In Essaouira, a week will be more suitable for those looking for a slow-paced stay, with plenty of time for walking, cafes, the ocean and possibly water sports.

It is also possible to combine the two cities rather than choosing one.

Can you visit Agadir and Essaouira during the same trip?

Yes. Both cities fit very well into a route along the Atlantic coast.

The route allows you to cross several interesting coastal areas and can be extended with stops such as Imsouane and Taghazout .

This combination is particularly interesting precisely because Agadir and Essaouira do not offer the same experience.

Our Road trip guide on the Moroccan Atlantic coast: 7-day itinerary offers a route linking Essaouira, Imsouane, Taghazout, Agadir, Mirleft and Sidi Ifni.

Do you need a car in Agadir?

A car is not essential if you mainly plan to stay around the beach, the promenade and the main parts of the city.

Taxis make it easy to get around town.

However, a car becomes much more interesting for exploring Taghazout, the surrounding beaches, the Anti-Atlas or the regions south of Agadir .

If you are considering renting a car, consult our guide Renting a car in Morocco: everything you need to know before driving .

Do you need a car in Essaouira?

To discover Essaouira itself, no.

The medina, the port, the ramparts and the beach are close enough that most visits can be done on foot.

A car becomes useful if you wish to explore the beaches, villages and landscapes of the hinterland or continue on to Agadir.

To organize a trip entirely by transport, see Travelling in Morocco without a car: how to get around?

And what about taxis?

In both cities, small taxis are convenient for reaching neighborhoods that are too far away to be explored on foot.

In Agadir, they are particularly useful given the size of the city.

In Essaouira, most of the tourist centre can be explored on foot, but taxis are still useful for reaching some outlying accommodations or the bus station.

Our guide Taxis in Morocco: small taxi, grand taxi, applications and fares explains how the meter, grand taxis and the different applications work.

Which destination is easiest to reach from the airport?

Agadir has a major international airport, Agadir-Al Massira , served by numerous international connections.

This makes it easy to organize a stay dedicated solely to Agadir and its region.

Essaouira also has an airport, but flight options are generally more limited. Many travelers therefore travel to Essaouira from Marrakech or include it in a coastal tour.

To prepare for the initial steps after a flight, consult our guide Arriving in Morocco: what to do when leaving the airport?

What destination is best for a first trip to Morocco?

Both can be suitable, but they do not give the same first impression of the country.

Agadir is a particularly easy first approach: developed tourist infrastructure, beach, hotels, restaurants and excursions that are easy to organize.

Essaouira offers more heritage and allows you to immediately discover a historic medina while remaining on the coast.

If you wish to plan a more comprehensive trip covering several regions, consult our guide First trip to Morocco: which itinerary to choose?

What type of accommodation should I choose in Agadir?

Agadir has a very large range of hotels, resorts, apartments and establishments with swimming pools.

For a seaside holiday, the location in relation to the beach and the presence of a swimming pool may be more important than being located in a historic district.

Travelers who primarily wish to relax may therefore prefer an establishment offering several on-site services.

You can view our accommodations in Agadir directly.

What type of accommodation should I choose in Essaouira?

In Essaouira, choosing a riad or guesthouse in the medina allows you to live more at the pace of the old town.

Accommodation outside the city walls, on the other hand, may offer more space or more direct access to the beach.

The appeal therefore depends on what you are looking for: going directly into the alleys of the medina or favouring the ocean and more open spaces.

Find our accommodations in Essaouira .

Do I need to book in advance?

In both cities, it is generally still possible to find accommodation thanks to a significant range of tourist options.

However, the best-located establishments, family rooms, small riads and hotels offering good value for money can be fully booked during the most popular periods.

In Agadir, this is particularly relevant during holiday periods when seaside hotels are in high demand.

In Essaouira, the more limited capacity of some small riads may justify more advance planning if you have a specific address in mind.
