Taxis in Morocco: small taxis, grand taxis, apps and fares

Small taxis in town, large taxis for longer journeys, meters, negotiable fares, or mobile apps: Moroccan taxis don't all operate the same way. Here's how to recognize a reputable vehicle, know the price before setting off, and avoid misunderstandings.

Taxis are one of the simplest and most common ways to get around in Morocco. They allow you to travel just a few kilometers in a large city as well as reach a village or a destination located several dozen kilometers away.

For a first-time traveler, however, the system may seem confusing: small taxi, grand taxi, meter, fare per seat, private car, airport taxi or mobile application do not work in the same way.

Once you understand the difference, taking a taxi in Morocco becomes much simpler.

Small taxi and grand taxi: what's the difference?

Morocco mainly uses two categories of taxis.

The small taxi is intended for travel within a city. It is generally a small car easily recognizable by its color, which varies depending on the city.

The grand taxi primarily serves longer journeys: suburbs, airports, villages, regional connections, or trips between different cities. It can operate in shared mode, with each passenger paying for their seat, or be privatized for a group.

This distinction is essential because the method of calculating the price is not the same.

How to recognize a small taxi?

Small taxis have a color specific to their city. This is one of the easiest ways to recognize them.

For example :

  • Casablanca : red;
  • Agadir : red;
  • Rabat : blue;
  • Tangier : blue;
  • Marrakech : ochre or orange tint.

Other cities use different colors. You will therefore quickly notice that all the small taxis in a given city generally look the same.

The small taxi is the classic urban taxi in Morocco and normally remains within the city limits.

Does the small taxi operate on a meter?

Yes. The fares for small urban taxis are regulated and the vehicle normally has a meter .

When you go up, just check if it has been triggered.

If the driver does not activate it, you can ask:

" The meter, please. "

Or, adding a very common word from Darija:

"The meter, afak."

It is much simpler to settle this issue before starting the journey than to discuss the amount once you arrive.

What should you do if the driver refuses to use the meter?

In highly touristic areas, it may happen that a driver directly offers a price instead of using the meter.

You then have two options: ask for the odometer reading again or clearly agree on a price before the car starts .

If the quoted fare seems excessive and there are other taxis available, you are under no obligation to accept the ride.

Above all, avoid getting in without a meter and without an agreed price, thinking you can negotiate the fare once you arrive. This is precisely the situation that most easily creates misunderstandings.

How much does a small taxi cost in Morocco?

There is no single fare valid throughout Morocco. Fares are set locally and may change.

The price depends in particular on:

  • of the city;
  • of the distance;
  • travel time;
  • of the schedule;
  • of the local tariff applied to the meter.

For a short urban trip, the small taxi generally remains a relatively economical means of transport.

Rather than memorizing a price found on the Internet several years ago, the best reference point remains the taxi meter .

Does a taxi cost more at night?

Different nighttime pricing may apply depending on local regulations.

The change in fare is normally taken into account by the vehicle's meter when it is in use.

Since timetables and surcharges are not necessarily the same in all cities, avoid assuming that the same timetable rule applies everywhere in Morocco.

For a late-night journey, you can simply ask the driver if the night fare is already included in the meter.

Can a small taxi take other passengers?

Depending on local customs and the city, a small taxi may sometimes pick up another passenger whose journey is compatible with yours.

This may come as a surprise to those accustomed to thinking of a taxi as a completely private vehicle.

In this case, each ride remains separate. The mere fact that another passenger gets on does not mean you have to arbitrarily share the total fare.

How many people can take a small taxi?

Small taxis are low-capacity vehicles and are generally designed for a maximum of three passengers , in addition to the driver.

If you are travelling with four adults, several children or a lot of luggage, a small taxi may not be suitable.

A grand taxi, a vehicle booked through an app, or a private transfer will often be more convenient.

What is a grand taxi?

The grand taxi is a larger capacity vehicle intended primarily for regional or intercity journeys.

The old, large Mercedes sedans, once emblematic of the system, are gradually being replaced by newer and more spacious vehicles.

Grand taxis generally depart from dedicated stations . A single city may have several stations depending on the destinations served.

They are particularly useful for reaching towns or villages that do not have a convenient rail link.

How does a large shared taxi work?

The way it works is very different from that of a small taxi.

On a regular route, you usually buy a seat in the vehicle . The taxi leaves when a sufficient number of passengers are heading to the same destination.

So you don't necessarily pay for the whole car.

The system is particularly interesting on frequent regional connections: a station serves a given destination and passengers take their seats as they arrive.

Do we have to wait until the grand taxi is full?

Often yes, when it operates in collective mode.

On a busy route, the wait can be very short. On a less busy route or during off-peak hours, it can be longer.

If you do not wish to wait, it is sometimes possible to pay for several remaining seats or to privatize the vehicle.

Simply ask for the price before deciding: depending on the number of travelers in your group, booking the entire car can sometimes still be reasonable.

Can a grand taxi be privatized?

Yes. A grand taxi can often be booked just for your group.

This solution is useful when you are travelling in a group, with luggage, or when you want to leave immediately without waiting for other passengers.

In this case, the price is obviously no longer that of a single seat.

Ask for the total price of the vehicle to the destination before departure to avoid any ambiguity between "price per person" and "price for the car".

Do grand taxis use a meter?

The usual operation of a large regional taxi is not that of a small urban metered taxi.

On regular public transport services, the price is generally set per place and per destination .

For private hire or a special journey, ask for the total price before departure.

At the station, it is also very easy to ask:

"How much for a seat?"

This simple question immediately reveals whether the stated amount relates to a person or the entire vehicle.

Grand taxi or coach to get from one city to another?

The two solutions are complementary.

A grand taxi can be a good option for destinations that are close or poorly served by regular public transport. It also allows you to leave as soon as a sufficient number of passengers are gathered.

Coach travel is often more comfortable for long journeys and allows for more planning thanks to timetables and reservations.

The train also remains very convenient between cities served by the rail network.

To compare all these options, consult our guide Travelling in Morocco without a car: how to get around?

How do taxis work at airports?

Airport taxis are a special case.

Airport transfers don't necessarily follow the same procedure as hailing a small taxi on a downtown street. Many airports have an official taxi rank and specific fares depending on the destination.

In Marrakech, for example, the taxi rank is located on the airport esplanade and fares to different destinations are displayed at the taxi parking lot.

In Rabat-Salé, the fares for grand taxis to Rabat and Salé are also officially displayed.

Therefore, do not assume that the urban meter must necessarily be used for a journey from an airport.

Where to catch a taxi at the airport?

Preferably use the official station indicated at the exit of the terminal .

The airport signs usually allow you to go directly to the taxi area.

When prices are displayed, check the price list corresponding to your destination before you leave.

If someone approaches you directly in the terminal to offer you a vehicle, clearly ask what service it is and what the price will be before following them.

Our guide Arriving in Morocco: what to do when leaving the airport? also explains how to organize SIM cards, money, taxis, transfers and car rentals during the first few hours of the trip.

Are airport taxi fares negotiable?

When an official price list is displayed for the destination, it is the best reference point and there is no reason to systematically turn the race into a negotiation.

Prices vary greatly from airport to airport depending on the distance to the city.

For example, Agadir-Al Massira airport is much further from the center of Agadir than Marrakech-Menara is from the center of Marrakech. Therefore, directly comparing the fares of two different airports makes little sense.

Prices may change, so check the price list displayed on site or the official airport information rather than an old price posted on a forum.

Taxi or pre-booked transfer?

To reach an easily accessible hotel, an official taxi is usually perfectly adequate.

Booking a transfer in advance becomes advantageous when:

  • your flight arrives very late;
  • you are travelling with several children;
  • You have a lot of luggage;
  • your accommodation is difficult to locate;
  • you want to know the exact price before the trip;
  • Your riad is located deep within a medina.

Transferring is not necessarily the cheapest solution, but it can simplify arrival.

Can you order a taxi using an app in Morocco?

Yes, but the situation varies from city to city and is changing rapidly.

Several apps now allow you to request a vehicle in Morocco. They offer a clear advantage for a visitor: the starting point and destination are indicated directly on a map , which avoids problems with pronunciation or address.

The price is also shown or estimated before the ride, depending on the application used.

However, availability is not the same everywhere. An app that is very popular in Casablanca may have far fewer drivers in a smaller city.

Does Uber operate in Morocco?

Yes. After several years of absence, Uber officially returned to Morocco in November 2025 .

The service is currently available in Casablanca and Marrakech , where Uber works with licensed transport vehicles.

The categories offered include UberX and UberXL, the latter being potentially interesting for a family or group with more luggage.

As with all apps, check directly in the app for actual availability at the location and time you wish to leave.

Does Yassir work in Morocco?

Yes. Yassir has a ride-hailing booking service in Morocco.

The application allows you to define the starting point and destination and displays the price before confirmation.

According to information currently published by Yassir Maroc, rides can be paid in cash to the driver based on the amount indicated in the application.

The availability of different types of vehicles depends on the area.

And what about InDrive?

inDrive is also used in several major Moroccan cities.

Its operation differs from that of a classic taxi: the application allows in particular to propose a price for the journey, to which a driver can respond or make another offer.

The availability and precise operation of the service may vary from city to city. Therefore, please check directly in the app when you travel.

Which application should I install before leaving?

It is not necessary to depend on a single application.

If you plan to use them, you can install two services available in the cities on your itinerary before departure. This allows you to compare wait times and fares.

An internet connection will obviously be required to order a ride. If your European plan does not cover Morocco, consult our guide "Phone and Internet in Morocco: European SIM, Moroccan card or eSIM?" .

App or small taxi: which is cheaper?

There is no single answer that applies to all journeys.

For a short trip around town with a small taxi using its meter properly, a traditional taxi can be very economical.

However, an app offers other advantages:

  • destination entered in advance;
  • price shown or estimated;
  • vehicle location;
  • information about the driver and the vehicle;
  • race history;
  • possibility of choosing a larger vehicle depending on the service.

The choice therefore depends as much on the desired simplicity as on the price.

Can I pay for a taxi by credit card?

With a traditional taxi taken from the street, it is best to assume that you will need cash in dirhams .

Electronic payments are evolving, but they are not universal enough to rely solely on a bank card.

Apps may offer different payment methods depending on the service. Check the chosen method before confirming the ride.

Always keep some small bills in your wallet. Our guide , Money in Morocco: Cash, Bank Cards, Currency Exchange and ATMs — How to Pay?, explains how to withdraw and use dirhams during your stay.

Why are small denominations useful?

A 20 or 50 DH note is much more practical than a 200 DH note for a short trip.

It can happen that a driver has little change, especially at the beginning of their shift.

If you only have a large bill, let him know before you arrive or try to get change at a shop.

This precaution also avoids discussions related to giving change.

Should you leave a tip for the taxi driver?

The tip does not need to be calculated according to a precise percentage.

If the journey went well, you can simply round up the amount slightly or leave a few dirhams.

This is not an obligation and the amount remains at your discretion.

How do I tell the driver my destination?

In large cities, the name of the hotel or riad is not always the best guide.

A driver will more easily know:

  • a large square;
  • a gate of the medina;
  • a neighborhood;
  • an important avenue;
  • a well-known monument;
  • a train station.

If your accommodation is located in a small alley, display its location on Google Maps and possibly ask the establishment which taxi drop-off point to use.

Can a taxi enter a medina?

Not necessarily.

A large part of the historic medinas consists of narrow or pedestrian streets in which a car cannot circulate.

The taxi will then drop you off at the door or the nearest accessible point.

This is especially important when arriving with large suitcases. Ask your riad exactly where the driver should drop you off and if they can arrange assistance for the last few meters.

Can you book a taxi for the whole day?

Yes, but then it's more of a private hire with a driver than a simple urban ride.

A grand taxi or tourist vehicle can be booked to take an excursion, wait during a visit and then return to the starting point.

In this case, agree before leaving:

  • of the total price;
  • of the route;
  • the number of stops;
  • waiting time;
  • of the return time.

Do not assume that an advertised price for the outbound journey automatically includes waiting time and the return journey.

Grand taxi or private driver for an excursion?

For a simple journey between two destinations, a grand taxi can be perfectly suitable.

For a day with several visits and stops, a private driver or transfer usually allows you to define the itinerary and the time spent at each site more precisely.

Always ask what is actually included in the advertised price.

Taking a taxi during Ramadan

Taxis continue to operate during Ramadan, but the rhythm of the city changes around iftar .

Just before sunset, traffic can be heavier as many drivers also try to reach their families to break the fast.

At the time of iftar, availability may temporarily decrease before activity resumes in the evening.

If your trip takes place during this period, consult our guide Travelling to Morocco during Ramadan: what changes for a tourist?

The main mistakes to avoid

  • Getting into a small taxi without checking the meter or agreeing on the price.
  • Wait until the end of the journey to ask how much the fare costs.
  • Confusing the price of a seat in a grand taxi with the price of the entire vehicle.
  • Assuming that all Moroccan taxis charge the same fare.
  • Applying an old fare found on the internet to an airport journey.
  • Only carry large bills.
  • Picking up a vehicle at the airport without identifying the service used.
  • Ordering a car via an app without checking the license plate and the vehicle indicated.
  • To assume that an application available in a major city will necessarily work everywhere in Morocco.

Small taxi, grand taxi or app: which one to choose?

For a short trip within a city, a small metered taxi is usually the simplest solution.

To reach a neighbouring town, a village or to make a regional connection, the large shared taxi is often economical and practical.

If you are travelling in a group or wish to leave immediately, you can also hire a private grand taxi.

The apps are useful when you want to enter your destination in advance, know the vehicle and have an estimate or price before departure.

Finally, for a late arrival, a family with a lot of luggage or accommodation that is difficult to find, a pre-booked transfer may remain the most comfortable solution.

Good habits to adopt before mounting

  • Check that it is the right type of taxi for your journey.
  • For a small taxi, check that the meter is activated.
  • If there is no meter, find out the price before you leave.
  • For a shared grand taxi, ask for the price of a seat.
  • For a private vehicle, confirm the total price of the car.
  • At airports, consult the official prices displayed where they exist.
  • Keep some small dirham bills on hand.
  • On an app, check the license plate and vehicle before getting in.

The Moroccan taxi system may seem peculiar during the first few hours of the journey, but its logic is ultimately simple: small taxi and meter for the city, large taxi for longer journeys, price known before departure when there is no meter .

Once these few rules are understood, the taxi becomes one of the most practical ways to get around in Morocco, whether it is to reach a restaurant a few streets away, a train station, an airport or a destination located outside the main transport routes.
