Telephone and Internet in Morocco: European SIM, Moroccan card or eSIM?

Using your European mobile plan, buying a Moroccan SIM card upon arrival, or installing an eSIM before leaving: several solutions allow you to stay connected in Morocco. Here's how to choose the best option based on your phone, your plan, and your itinerary, while avoiding unpleasant surprises related to roaming charges.

Having an internet connection in Morocco is particularly useful for using Google Maps, WhatsApp, booking apps, transportation , or simply staying in touch with loved ones. Several options are available: continuing to use your European SIM card, buying a Moroccan SIM card once you arrive, or installing an eSIM.

The best choice depends mainly on your current plan, the length of your trip, and your phone. In many cases, a Moroccan line offers plenty of mobile data for a reasonable price, but some European plans now also include Morocco.

Can I use my European SIM card in Morocco?

Yes. A French, Spanish, Belgian or other European SIM card can generally connect to Moroccan networks through international roaming .

It is important to know that Morocco is not part of the European Union or the European Economic Area . Therefore, the European "Roam Like at Home" principle, which allows you to use your mobile plan in other European countries under the same conditions as at home, does not automatically apply to Morocco.

Some European operators do, however, include Morocco in certain plans or offer international passes. Before leaving, it is therefore important to carefully check the terms of your subscription: the amount of data available in Morocco, the validity period of the pass, included calls, and any potential additional charges.

Beware of data roaming

If your plan does not include Morocco, using the internet with your usual card can cost much more than in the European Union.

Before takeoff, it's wise to disable data roaming on your European line until you've checked your carrier's terms and conditions. A smartphone can use data in the background without you intentionally opening an app: photo syncing, messaging, backups, updates, or notifications.

Once you arrive, the SMS automatically sent by your operator will usually indicate the applicable rates in Morocco. It's best to read it before activating mobile data.

When should I keep my European SIM card?

Keeping your usual plan may be the simplest solution if it already includes a sufficient amount of data in Morocco or if your operator offers an international pass at an attractive price.

This avoids having to change your number and allows you to immediately keep your usual calls, SMS messages and services.

For a short stay with minimal internet needs, this solution may be sufficient. However, for longer trips or significant use of browsing, social media, and photo or video sharing, a local plan often becomes more attractive.

Buy a Moroccan SIM card

Morocco has three main mobile operators: Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, and inwi . All offer prepaid plans allowing internet access without a long-term subscription.

A Moroccan map also gives a Moroccan telephone number in +212 , which can be useful for contacting accommodation, a guide, a driver, an agency or other local contact.

Offers and promotions change regularly. It is therefore better to compare the amount of data, the validity period and the calls included rather than choosing solely based on the advertised price.

Can you buy a SIM card at the airport?

In the main Moroccan airports, it is generally possible to find sales points or operator counters where you can obtain a SIM card shortly after arrival.

It's a practical solution: staff can activate and check that the connection is working before you leave the airport.

However, the packages offered at the airport are not necessarily the same as those available online or in shops in town. Before paying, therefore, clearly ask for the total price, the amount of data included, and the validity period .

An identity card or passport may be requested for line identification.

Maroc Telecom, Orange or inwi: which operator to choose?

All three operators have mobile networks covering the country's main cities and tourist areas. In Marrakech, Casablanca, Agadir, Rabat, Fez, Tangier, and other major urban centers, the choice often depends more on the available options at the time of travel than on the operator itself.

The situation can be different when travelling in rural areas, in the Atlas Mountains or in southern Morocco. Coverage varies depending on the valleys, villages and tracks used.

If your route includes remote areas, it may be helpful to ask your accommodation or a local guide which network has the best coverage in the area. No operator guarantees a reliable connection in all remote regions.

The eSIM: an increasingly practical alternative

An eSIM performs the same function as a traditional SIM card but without a physical card to insert into the phone. The operator's profile is installed directly on the smartphone, usually using a QR code.

This solution is particularly practical for travellers with a compatible phone: it allows you to keep the European SIM card in the device while using a second line for Internet in Morocco.

Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc, and inwi currently offer eSIM solutions. There are also international providers of travel eSIMs, often focused solely on internet access.

How much does a Moroccan eSIM cost?

Prices change regularly, but the available offers give an idea of the budget required.

For example, Maroc Telecom currently offers a 20GB eSIM visitor plan valid for 30 days at 120 DH, as well as a 45GB plan valid for 30 days at 200 DH. Other plans are available depending on the desired data allowance and calls.

inwi also offers eSIM packages with Internet, calls and different validity periods, while Orange Maroc markets prepaid eSIMs and offers aimed particularly at visitors.

These prices may be subject to change or promotions, so always check the operator's current offer before purchasing.

Moroccan eSIM or international eSIM?

The two solutions are not exactly equivalent.

An eSIM purchased directly from a Moroccan operator functions like a real local line and can include a Moroccan number, calls and SMS in addition to mobile data.

Many international eSIMs designed for travelers only provide an internet connection. They can be very convenient for arriving in Morocco with a pre-configured connection, but they don't necessarily provide a Moroccan phone number.

Therefore, it is necessary to compare not only the number of gigabytes, but also the validity period, the presence of a local number and the possibility of making calls.

Dual SIM: Keep your European number and use the internet with a Moroccan SIM card

For many travelers, this is probably the most practical setup. Recent smartphones can often handle a physical SIM card and an eSIM simultaneously, or even two eSIMs depending on the model.

This allows you to keep your European line active to receive certain calls or SMS , while setting the Moroccan line as the main line for mobile data.

In your phone settings, check that mobile data is using your Moroccan line and that data roaming remains disabled on your European line if your plan does not cover Morocco.

What happens to WhatsApp if you change your SIM card?

Installing a Moroccan SIM card does not mean you have to change your WhatsApp number.

WhatsApp can continue to work with the number your account was registered with , even when internet data comes from a different SIM card or eSIM.

Therefore, it is generally not necessary to use the "change number" function. You can keep your usual number on WhatsApp while using your Moroccan internet connection.

However, it remains useful to keep access to your original number, especially in case of a new account verification.

How much information should I plan for a trip to Morocco?

Data consumption depends a lot on your habits. For mainly using WhatsApp, Google Maps, internet searches and a few travel apps, a few gigabytes may be enough for a short stay.

Consumption increases rapidly with videos, social networks, video calls, connection sharing or automatic backup of photos to the cloud.

To reduce your consumption, download offline maps of the regions you will be visiting before departure and temporarily disable automatic backups using mobile data.

Is it absolutely necessary to have internet access everywhere in Morocco?

No. Hotels, riads, hostels, restaurants, and cafes very often offer Wi-Fi. However, a local SIM card remains very useful when traveling, especially for navigation, changing routes, and communicating with accommodations.

In some mountainous or desert regions, you must also accept that mobile network coverage may not always be available. Downloading maps, reservations, and important information in advance is therefore a good precaution.

Which option should you choose for your trip to Morocco?

If your European plan already includes enough data in Morocco, keeping it is generally the simplest solution.

If Morocco is charged outside of your plan, a Moroccan SIM or eSIM is often a more suitable solution to have plenty of mobile data during your stay.

For Dual SIM compatible phones, keeping your European line while using a Moroccan eSIM for Internet allows you to enjoy the advantages of both solutions.

Finally, if you want to be connected as soon as you land without going through a counter or shop, installing an eSIM before departure is a particularly convenient alternative.

Checks to make before leaving

  • Check if your current plan includes Morocco.
  • Check roaming prices if Morocco is not included.
  • Check if your phone is eSIM and Dual SIM compatible.
  • Make sure the phone is not locked to a carrier.
  • Disable data roaming on the European line if necessary.
  • Download offline maps of the regions included in your route.
  • Keep important information and reservations accessible without logging in.

A few checks before departure will allow you to arrive in Morocco with a suitable solution and avoid a simple use of the Internet abroad turning your phone bill into an unpleasant surprise.
