Marrakech or Fez: which one to choose for a first trip?

Marrakech and Fez boast two of Morocco's most fascinating medinas, but they offer very different experiences. From lively atmosphere and heritage sites to souks, riads, excursions, and ease of planning, here's how to choose the city that best suits your first trip.

Marrakech or Fez? For a first trip to Morocco, the choice often comes down to these two great imperial cities. Both have a historic medina, souks, riads, monuments and a very strong identity, but the experience is not the same.

Marrakech is generally more lively, more touristy, and offers a wide choice of restaurants, gardens, accommodations, and excursions. Fez offers a more focused experience centered on its medina, its heritage, its artisan workshops, and an urban layout inherited from several centuries of history.

It is therefore not a question of determining which is "best", but of knowing which atmosphere best suits the trip you wish to take .

Marrakech and Fez in a few words

To put it simply:

  • Marrakech : entertainment, Jemaa el-Fna, souks, palaces, gardens, riads, restaurants and numerous excursions around the city;
  • Fez : large historic medina, labyrinthine alleyways, madrasas, crafts, tanneries and immersion more focused on urban heritage.

These two summaries are obviously reductive. Marrakech has a significant historical heritage, and Fez is much more than just its monuments. But they do help to understand why the same traveler might prefer one or the other.

Marrakech: a very diverse first experience

Marrakech allows you to discover several facets of Morocco without necessarily changing accommodation.

In the medina, you can go from souks to palaces, reach Jemaa el-Fna square, discover gardens and then find the calm of a riad a few streets away.

The city also boasts a wide range of restaurants, cafes, rooftop bars, hotels, and activities. For a first visit, this makes it easy to alternate between cultural visits, walks, and more relaxed moments.

Fez: an immersion more focused on the medina

Fez offers a different experience.

Its medina of Fes el-Bali forms a vast network of alleyways, passages, souks, workshops and historical monuments. Much of the discovery simply involves walking, observing and gradually moving from one district to another.

Fez is particularly interesting for travelers attracted by history, architecture and traditional craftsmanship : leather, ceramics, wood, metal or textiles still occupy an important place in the medina.

Which medina is the easiest for a first trip?

Both medinas can be confusing in the first few hours, but in different ways.

In Marrakech, several major landmarks allow you to find your way around quite quickly: Jemaa el-Fna, the Koutoubia, the main axes of the souks and the gates of the medina.

Fes el-Bali is more labyrinthine. Some alleyways end in dead ends, others pass under houses or change direction without offering any real visual landmark.

It is therefore particularly useful in Fez to register the location of your accommodation and to ask the riad which is the easiest access point upon arrival.

Should you hire a guide in the medina of Fez?

It's not mandatory, but a guided tour can be particularly interesting on the first day.

A guide not only helps you find your way around but, more importantly, helps you understand the organization of the medina, the history of the different districts, the madrasas, the fondouks, and the workings of the craft workshops.

After this initial exploration, it becomes easier to return on your own to the areas that interest you.

In Marrakech, a guided tour can also provide a lot of historical context, but it is generally easier to build your own initial walk between the main sites.

Is Marrakech much more touristy?

Marrakech hosts a particularly visible tourist activity. In a large part of the medina, restaurants, shops, riads and activities cater directly to visitors.

This brings advantages: a huge range of choices, easy-to-find services, numerous restaurants, excursions offered everywhere, and accommodations for all budgets.

But this also means that some areas are very busy and commercial solicitations may be more prevalent.

Fez obviously also welcomes many visitors, but a larger part of the medina retains a daily activity that does not depend solely on tourism.

The souks: Marrakech or Fez?

Both cities allow you to spend several hours in the souks, but the experience is different.

In Marrakech, the souks around Jemaa el-Fna form a vast complex where handicrafts, clothing, decoration, spices, leather goods, lighting and numerous products intended for visitors are mixed together.

In Fez, artisanal activities occupy a particularly visible place within the medina itself. Certain areas remain organized around specific trades, and one regularly encounters workshops, fondouks, and small production units.

For someone who is particularly interested in manufacturing and traditional crafts , Fez is therefore especially worth spending time in.

The tanneries of Fez

Tanneries are one of the iconic images of Fez. The most famous is that of Chouara , where the surrounding terraces allow you to observe the basins used for the treatment and dyeing of leather.

The area is very popular and several shops offer access to their terraces.

You don't have to buy anything to enjoy the experience. As in other tourist areas, simply ask about the conditions before agreeing to any service or assistance.

To prepare for this type of situation, our guide "Traps to avoid in Morocco: tips for traveling with peace of mind" presents several useful reflexes.

Jemaa el-Fna: a unique Marrakech experience

Fez doesn't really have an equivalent to Jemaa el-Fna .

The large square located in the heart of Marrakech changes atmosphere throughout the day. It is at once a point of passage, a meeting place and one of the main landmarks of the medina.

In the late afternoon and evening, activity increases with the food stalls and the crowds moving between the square and the souks.

For a traveler looking for a very lively city in the evening, Marrakech therefore offers more possibilities concentrated in the same area.

Which city has the most monuments to visit?

Both cities have enough heritage to occupy several days.

In Marrakech, visits can alternate between palaces, tombs, madrasas, gardens and ramparts.

In Fez, a large part of the heritage is directly integrated into the fabric of the medina: madrasas, gates, fondouks, fountains, mosques and old houses appear along the alleyways.

The difference therefore lies more in the way of visiting than in the number of places of interest.

Marrakech for its gardens and more open spaces

Marrakech offers more opportunities to alternate the narrow streets of the medina with gardens, modern neighborhoods and more open spaces.

The Majorelle Garden is one of the city's most famous attractions. With its exotic plants, its easily recognizable colors, and its atmosphere different from that of the medina, it offers a complete change of scenery for a few hours.

The city also has other gardens and green spaces that offer a welcome break between visits to the souks or historical monuments.

This variety is one of the advantages of Marrakech for a first visit: it is easy to move from a very lively medina to a garden, a terrace, a modern area or a quieter space without leaving the city.

The Palmeraie: another side of Marrakech

A few kilometers from the center, the Palmeraie of Marrakech offers a very different setting from that of the medina, with palm trees, large properties, hotels and more open spaces.

It is often associated with camel rides, quad biking, hotels with swimming pools and certain experiences organized on the outskirts of the city.

It shouldn't be imagined as a completely unspoiled, wild oasis: the Palmeraie is now largely urbanized and touristy. Nevertheless, it remains an additional option for diversifying activities during a stay in Marrakech.

Fez doesn't really have a direct equivalent. Its appeal lies more in the medina, the heritage, the workshops and the historic districts than in large peripheral tourist areas.

In which city should I choose a riad?

Both cities are particularly well suited to a stay in a riad or guesthouse .

In Marrakech, the choice is immense, from small traditional houses to very high-end establishments with swimming pool, restaurant or spa.

In Fez, several old houses have vast patios, particularly elaborate decorations and an architecture that already constitutes part of the travel experience.

In both cases, pay particular attention to the location . A few hundred meters can make a real difference when you have to carry luggage through the narrow streets of the medina.

How many days should I plan to spend in Marrakech?

For a first visit, three days are enough to visit the main areas without turning the stay into a series of quick visits.

With four or five days, it becomes easier to add an excursion, the Palmeraie, more gardens or a more relaxed day.

Marrakech can also serve as a base at the beginning or end of a longer tour in southern Morocco.

How many days should I plan to spend in Fez?

Two full days already allow you to discover a large part of the medina, but three days offer a much more pleasant pace.

An extra day can be spent exploring the surrounding area, especially if you wish to visit Meknes or nearby historical sites.

Fes therefore works very well for a three to four day stay, or as a stop on a trip dedicated to the imperial cities and northern Morocco.

Which city should I choose for a stay of only two days?

With only two days, both cities remain possible, but you have to accept focusing on the essentials.

In Marrakech, you can dedicate one day to the medina, the souks and Jemaa el-Fna, then a second to the palaces, the Majorelle Garden and the other districts of the city.

In Fez, two days can be almost entirely devoted to the medina, with an initial general overview followed by a more in-depth exploration of certain districts and monuments.

With so little time, avoid adding several long excursions.

Which city offers the most excursions?

Marrakech benefits from a particularly convenient location for taking numerous excursions.

From the city, it is possible to reach different valleys of the High Atlas, mountain villages, Essaouira or to start a real route towards Ouarzazate and the Sahara.

This location makes it an interesting base for a traveler who wants to combine a few days in the city with very different landscapes.

To plan a trip to the South, consult for example our Marrakech to Merzouga Road Trip guide.

What excursions can you take from Fez?

Fez makes a good base for exploring another part of Morocco.

Meknes can easily be integrated into the discovery of the imperial cities and the surroundings also allow you to visit the archaeological site of Volubilis.

To the south, the landscapes of the Middle Atlas offer a transition to a more mountainous Morocco.

The choice of excursions is therefore different from Marrakech: less oriented towards the High Atlas and the pre-Saharan South, more towards the historical cities and the central-northern regions.

And what if you dream mainly of the desert?

Marrakech and Fez can both be included in a trip to the Sahara, but the routes are very different.

From Marrakech, the classic route crosses the High Atlas, Ouarzazate, the Dadès valley and Tinghir before reaching Merzouga.

From Fes, the route to Merzouga descends further through the Middle Atlas and the interior regions.

In both cases, it is a real journey of several hundred kilometers and not a short excursion of a few hours.

If the desert is your priority, consult our guide Merzouga, Zagora, M'Hamid or Chegaga: which desert to choose?

Marrakech or Fez without a car?

A car is not necessary in either city to explore the medina.

On the contrary, historic districts are mainly visited on foot and parking can become a constraint.

To reach more distant areas, train stations or airports, taxis easily complement travel arrangements.

If you are planning your entire trip without a vehicle, consult our guide Travelling in Morocco without a car: how to get around?

And what about taxis in both cities?

Small taxis make it possible to carry out urban journeys that cannot be easily made on foot.

Within the medina, they obviously won't be able to enter the many pedestrian alleyways. It's therefore important to know the drop-off point corresponding to your accommodation.

Our guide Taxis in Morocco: small taxi, grand taxi, applications and fares explains how the meter works, airport taxis and available applications.

Which city is best suited if you like going out in the evening?

Marrakech offers a wider range of restaurants, rooftops, hotel bars and late-night establishments, both in the medina and in modern districts.

Fez also has restaurants and terraces, but the travel experience generally relies less on nightlife.

If lively evenings and a wide choice of restaurants are important to your stay, then Marrakech is more suited to this type of trip.

And for a more peaceful trip?

It would be misleading to present Fez as a calm city: its medina can be dense, active and sometimes confusing.

The difference lies more in the type of entertainment. Marrakech has a very visible tourist and nightlife scene, while Fez gives more the impression of a city organized around its medina, its shops and its trades.

To truly find a peaceful stay, you often have to look beyond these two major destinations.

If peace and quiet and fewer tourists are a priority, consult our guide Where to go in Morocco to avoid the most crowded places?

Which city is best for crafts?

Both cities have a strong tradition of craftsmanship.

Marrakech offers a huge variety of choices in its souks, with products also coming from other regions of Morocco.

In Fez, workshops and crafts are particularly integrated into the functioning of the medina. The city is especially known for leatherwork, ceramics, carved wood, and metalwork.

If observing artisans and understanding manufacturing methods is one of your priorities, plan to spend more time in the medina of Fez.

Marrakech or Fez with children?

Both destinations are suitable for families, but Marrakech generally offers more opportunities to alternate between cultural visits and different activities.

Gardens, swimming pool in the accommodation, excursions, Palmeraie and more open spaces make it easier to vary the days.

In Fez, exploration relies heavily on walking through the medina. This can be exciting with curious children, but requires more planning with a stroller or very young children.

To plan a larger family holiday, consult our guide Morocco with children: where to go with children?

Marrakech or Fez as a couple?

Both cities have very beautiful riads and are well suited for a stay for two.

Marrakech offers more hotels with pools, spas, restaurants, gardens and organized experiences, while Fez may suit couples who wish to spend more time on history, walks and architecture.

The choice therefore depends more on how you imagine your days than on the composition of the trip.

To compare Marrakech, Fez and other destinations suitable for a stay for two, consult our guide Morocco for couples: where to go for a stay for two?

Which city in summer?

Marrakech and Fez can experience very high temperatures in the summer.

In both cities, plan visits for early morning and late afternoon, and schedule breaks during the hottest hours.

If you are travelling primarily to escape the summer heat, other regions of Morocco, particularly the Atlantic coast and some highland areas, may be more suitable.

In that case, consult our guide : Where to go in Morocco in the summer?

And in winter?

Winter generally allows you to visit both cities in pleasant conditions during the day, but mornings and evenings can be cool, particularly in Fez.

A traditional riad can also be cooler than a modern hotel, especially in the common areas that open onto the patio.

Therefore, check for the presence of heating if you are travelling during a cold period and this point is important for your comfort.

To compare Marrakech, Fez, the desert, the Atlantic coast and the Atlas Mountains at this time of year, consult our guide Where to go in Morocco in winter?

Which city is the easiest to include in a tour?

It depends entirely on the direction of travel.

Marrakech naturally fits into an itinerary towards the High Atlas, Ouarzazate, the southern valleys, the Sahara or Essaouira.

Fes fits very well into a circuit combining Meknes, Rabat, northern Morocco or the Middle Atlas.

If you wish to visit several imperial cities, you don't have to choose between the two. Our guide, "Imperial Cities of Morocco: Which Itinerary to Choose?" , offers a route combining Marrakech, Rabat, Meknes, and Fez.

Can you visit Marrakech and Fez during the same trip?

Yes, especially if you have at least a week and exploring cities is one of the main objectives of the trip.

However, it's important to avoid spending only a few hours in each city. Two or three full days in each city will allow you to better understand their differences.

With more time, Rabat and Meknes can complete the route.

And for a first trip of one week?

If you only have one week, it is not mandatory to visit both.

Choosing Marrakech, for example, allows you to combine a few days in the city with the Atlas Mountains or another stop located in the central-southern region.

Choosing Fes allows you to build a stay more focused on imperial cities, heritage and the north of the country.

To compare several types of tours, consult our guide First trip to Morocco: which itinerary to choose?

Should you book your riad in advance?

In both cities, there is plenty of accommodation available, but the best-located riads or those with few rooms can be fully booked during peak periods.

If accommodation is part of the experience you are looking for, then it is better not to wait until the last few days.

Our Morocco guide: should you book your accommodation and excursions in advance? explains when it is advantageous to plan ahead and when it is possible to maintain more flexibility.

Marrakech or Fez: choose according to your priorities

Choose Marrakech if you are looking for:

  • a very lively city;
  • a wide selection of restaurants and accommodations;
  • iconic gardens such as the Majorelle Garden;
  • the Palmeraie and more activities on the outskirts of the city;
  • spaces allowing for an alternative to the medina;
  • a more active evening life;
  • numerous excursions that are easy to organize;
  • a starting point towards the Atlas Mountains and southern Morocco.

Choose Fes instead if you are looking for:

  • a prolonged immersion in a historic medina;
  • a trip heavily focused on heritage;
  • craft trades and workshops;
  • madrasas, fondouks and traditional architecture;
  • a stay where walking and exploration occupy a large part of the days;
  • a starting point to discover Meknes, the Middle Atlas or continue north.

In summary: Marrakech or Fez for a first time?

For a first stay combining medina, restaurants, gardens, Majorelle Garden, Palmeraie, charming accommodation and excursions , Marrakech offers a wide variety of experiences and allows you to easily change atmospheres during the same stay.

For a trip more focused on history, architecture, craftsmanship and exploring a large medina , Fez offers a different and particularly rich experience.

If your trip is long enough, the choice is obviously not mandatory: visiting both allows you to understand how two major Moroccan imperial cities can offer different atmospheres.
