Rissani is the former capital of Tafilalet. In the 13th century , it welcomed the ancestor of the Alaouite dynasty who came from Saudi Arabia.

The bulk of the trade with Africa in the past consisted of gold, ivory, slaves , and salt, formerly imported from Mali. Tafilalet leather was produced in Rissani and was unparalleled in all of Morocco. It is a fine, supple leather made from goatskins tanned with tamarisk bark.
