Aït-ben-Haddou is located in the Ounila valley, south of Telouet, stronghold of the Glaoui , a valley which was a traditional passage point for caravans linking Marrakech to the south of the Sahara.

This is a striking example of traditional southern Moroccan architecture, built on a hillside at the top of which stood a communal granary. The village is a cluster of earthen buildings surrounded by walls, a ksar, a type of traditional pre-Saharan settlement. The houses are grouped within its defensive walls, reinforced by corner towers.

A cluster of villages surrounds this village. All were drawn to a river that flows through a valley. The inhabitants of these villages are mostly Berbers, formerly nomadic, who later chose a sedentary lifestyle for various reasons.

The ksar of Ait-ben-Haddou has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. Nicknamed "the Mont-Saint-Michel of the Chleuhs" during the French protectorate, several films have been shot there.
