Tangier is a city in northern Morocco, in the western Rif region. It is the capital of the Tangier-Tetouan region and the Tangier-Asilah prefecture . Located at the northernmost tip of the country, the city is Morocco's main gateway to Europe, from which it is separated by the 14 kilometers of the Strait of Gibraltar. Its population was 669,685 at the ²⁰⁰⁴ census, making it the fifth largest city in Morocco. It has been nicknamed "the city of foreigners" due to its numerous periods of colonization ( Phoenicians , Romans, Vandals, Arabs, Portuguese, English, French, and Spanish).
