Tangier occupies a unique position in the far north of Morocco, facing the Strait of Gibraltar, between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. A port city and cosmopolitan, it has a long history marked by numerous Mediterranean and European influences.
The medina of Tangier is best explored around the Grand Socco, its bustling shopping streets, and the kasbah that overlooks the old city. Further west, Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules offer stunning panoramic views of the ocean and are among the area's main natural attractions.
Tangier also makes a good base for exploring northern Morocco. To the east, Tetouan allows you to continue towards the Rif landscapes and the Mediterranean coast, while the immediate surroundings of Tangier alternate between beaches, cliffs and hills overlooking the strait.
